10 GREAT PLACES TO SAVOR THE SWEET LIFE

If June seems especially sweet, there's a reason. It's National Candy Month, an excuse to throw cavity caution to the wind. Author Kaie Wellman says she has noticed a trend toward new candy shops, including ones that feature both gourmet confections and familiar treats like gumdrops and lollipops. "It harks back to simpler times, to things that aren't so threatening," says Wellman, creator of the eat.shop guides (Cabazon Books) to 24 cities across North American and Europe. She shares her favorite spots with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.

This shop in the Silver Lake neighborhood aims high with its candy. The store is known for its chocolates, but you'll also find handmade toffees, cream mints and nougats, plus unexpected treats like candied kumquats. "The experience is being at a small store, but in the same vein, what they're doing feels very modern," Wellman says. 213-739-8149; valerieconfections.com
